First Breach has completed the first flight of a proprietary drone prototype as it develops two attritable unmanned aircraft platforms for defense and security applications.
The Hagerstown, Maryland-based company said the flight marks progress in its expansion from ammunition manufacturing into unmanned aerial systems. It expects to complete initial prototypes in the fourth quarter of 2026 and begin scaling production in the second quarter of 2027.
First Breach is developing the platforms through an agreement with Hellbender, a Pittsburgh engineering and manufacturing company. First Breach owns the drone platforms and associated intellectual property and will control manufacturing and commercialization, while Hellbender is providing engineering, design, technical support and component manufacturing.
According to First Breach, the first flight moves the program into its next stage of prototype development and manufacturing preparation. First Breach said it is continuing prototype iterations while building the automated production capabilities it plans to use as the program scales.
The company described the planned products as two Class 1 attritable drone platforms: a compact system for close-quarters use and a longer-range system. Attritable systems are generally intended to be economical enough for missions where loss or damage is an accepted operational possibility, rather than requiring the recovery expectations associated with more costly aircraft.
Both platforms are being developed around common components. First Breach said that approach is intended to support scalable assembly, consistent quality, adaptable mission configurations and domestic production. Shared components could also help simplify manufacturing and sustainment across multiple variants if the systems move into broader use.
Domestic production is a central part of the company’s strategy. First Breach currently operates about 80,000 square feet of ammunition-manufacturing space in Hagerstown and said it has more than 200,000 additional contiguous square feet intended to support drone production, robotic assembly, automated logistics and expanded ammunition operations.
The company is targeting production of more than 2,500 drones per week as manufacturing expands. It said the planned capacity will be supported by advanced robotics, computer vision and automated manufacturing. First Breach has not identified specific government contracts or customer deployments for the platforms.
For government users, the development could expand the pool of U.S.-made unmanned systems available for military, law-enforcement and security missions. A compact platform could potentially support short-range reconnaissance in a confined environment, while a longer-range variant could be evaluated for broader-area observation or perimeter operations. These are potential uses; First Breach has not identified confirmed deployments.
The program also reflects the growing focus on domestic manufacturing capacity for lower-cost unmanned systems. First Breach’s combination of common components, automated assembly and available manufacturing space is intended to give it a route to produce platforms at higher volume while maintaining control over the product and its supply chain.
The completed flight provides an early indication of progress as First Breach advances the platform toward prototype completion and planned production scaling. Government technology and procurement leaders will want to follow how the aircraft’s capabilities, mission configurations and delivery schedule develop as First Breach moves toward its 2027 production target.
